PROMISE commenced at the beginning of 1999 and has so far trained in excess of 700 Mentors. To date, nearly 1000 young people have been matched with Mentors. Each relationship is designed to last for a minimum of two years. In practice, many continue far longer. External evaluations have shown that these relationships introduce significant benefits to the lives of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable young people in Somerset, often where other interventions have struggled.   Perhaps the greatest benefits accrue to children looked after by the Local Authority. Over 40% of young people with mentors are currently or have in the past been the subject of a child protection plan. In many cases, mentors have become one of the most significant adults in their lives, as well as being a friend who is simply there whilst everything else is chaotic. The success of these relationships is due to the commitment and dedication shown by the volunteers themselves. PROMISE views its local communities as the major resource in supporting the development of resilience in children and young people struggling with adversity. “Inspirational” Prof Rod Morgan, Formerly Chair of The Youth Justice Board. “Stunning” Former Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police.
